A short review of the Yaesu / Vertex-Standard VX7R Handi-talkie There has been some discussion about the 300mw output of the radio on 222. I hooked my new VX7R up to the service monitor last night. Purpose was to check the power settings and receive sensitivity. SENSITIVITY: 50 and 144 are about 0.18uV, 222 is about 0.4uV, 440 is about 0.25uV. 857 is about 5 to 6uV, while at 897 the squelch hysteresis is problematic, with good quieting at 8uV but squelch open at 10uV (squelch setting at "1"). POWER OUT: 50/144/440 were all set to about 3.5 to 4 watts. 222 was set to 0.25 watts. 50/144 are easily set at 5 watts, this should be done with care using an accurate meter, and a spectrum analyzer if available. 222 POWER OUT ISSUES: Power output on 222 can be increased at the bottom of the band to approximately one watt. Judging by the spectrum analyzer, the reason Yaesu did not do this is spectral purity. There is a spur approximately 1MHz down from the transmit frequency at about 50 to 55dB below the transmit power level. Part 97 (thankyou to hamradio-online html hyperlinked part97!) specifies 60dB down for transmitters between 30 and 225 MHz, but only 40dB down for transmitters with 25 or less watts, but not to exceed 25uW delivered to the feedline. If my calculations are correct, for a 1 watt transmitter, a 25uW signal is 46dB down (log(.000025/1)). This would indicate that perhaps Yaesu was worried about manufacturing tolerances (my speculation). The PA does heat quite rapidly at 1 watt on 222. The spetral purity on my unit betters the requirements of the FCC part 97 regulations (97.307 e) when operating at 1 watt output. I adjusted L2 level to 1 watt, and set L1 on all bands to 0.05 watts. On 50/144/440 I set the power to 0.05, 0.3, 1.0, and ~5.0 watts. The 440 band can only manage about 3.6 watts output (this is common on Yaesu PA decks, and probably other manufacturers.) Disclaimer: My results are mine, they may not apply to your rig. I cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your rig. 222 POWER OUTPUT (PART 2): The 222 power at the bottom of the band can be set at about 1 watt. The power at the top of the band cannot be set above about 0.36 watts. The question occurs: what is the power at various 222 band frequencies? The results were quite encouraging. Yaesu seems to have managed to get about 1 watt all the way up to above 224MHz, with the fall off in output becoming rapid beyond 224.5MHz. Since 222 band repeaters are negative input, this will likely be no problem (there will be little or no call to TX at the high end of the band). Now, for the really hard core folk who have plowed through this posting, my L2 power settings in the alignment menu are 115 for both ends of the band. Note that 1) your radio may not meet the spectral purity requirements at this drive level, please inspect on a spectrum analyzer to be sure it does - 2) your radio may require a lower value to avoid non-linearities, each radio can be somewhat different, which is why there is a setting in the first place. - 3) your radio may need a higher value to attain a watt of output. A difference of one or two counts (113 to 117) would fully encompass the adjustment range, don't set this to 255 on your radio (please). OBSERVED PERFORMANCE: On the band, I find the two local 222 repeaters are very happy with this rig. The increase from 0.25 watts to 1.0 watts is a welcome boost, moving the rig from 'toy' class on 222 to a really reasonable performer that can work a reasonably distant repeater from inside the home. The low power setting of 0.05 watts provides for extended simplex qso's without excessive PA heating, assuming you're close to the other station. Note that the internal thermometer does *NOT* respond rapidly to PA heating, you are better able to judge by your hand on the back of the rig (heatsink). This is probably by design (the VX5R thermometer responded almost instantly to PA heating, making it useless for measuring ambient temperature, but very good for measuring final temperature). In conclusion, there are many software oddities with this rig, as there are with most Yaesu rigs. I wish they could employ some competent software engineers, but that appears to be something that isn't going to happen soon. Aside from those issues, the radio is a solid performer with decent dual receive capability. I *would* purchase the radio again, I'm quite pleased with it's RF performance and satisfied with it's S/W. Please note that I am a computer software engineer by profession, so my comments on the S/W may be colored by that. Enjoy & 73's - Tom, KB7EFZ

Auch ich habe so um 1974, als 11 Jähriger, mein erstes Handfunkgerät bekommen und seither bin ich vom Virus befallen. Als alter Schwarzfunker kenne ich natürlich die meisten Geräte aus Deiner Kollektion und an den QSL's von 11m Verbindungen aus JA,WH6, NZ und viele anderen aus den frühen 80er Jahren, habe ich heute noch Freude.Die letzten 15-16 Jahre war ich allerdings nur noch als SWL QRV (mit mehreren Jahren Unterbruch). Nachdem ich 2000 geheiratet habe, hatte ich plötzlich mehr Zeit (...), welche ich nutzte und die Ham-Lizenz doch noch machte, welche ich 1980 in den Sand setzte. Zur Zeit bin ich am Morse-Lehrgang.
